  4. The statesman John Lindsay, Lord Menmuir (d. 1598), second son of the 9th Earl of Crawford, bought Balcarres and Pitcorthie (Fife) in 1587. His son was created Baron Lindsay in 1633 and his grandson Earl of Balcarres in 1651.

  5. He carried the sceptre at King Charles II's Scottish Coronation in 1650 and, after the King's flight to Holland, was taken prisoner to London the following year. Lord Crawford holds the wand of the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, the office to which he was appointed in 1661.
