Adventurer Shark comes to a small village near a diamond-miners' camp, and local police arrest him, accusing him of having committed a bank robbery in a neighboring town. The police also confiscate the diamond mine for the state, which incites the miners to revolt, but they're defeated.
Luis Buñuel’s Death in the Garden is a superb psychodrama about how we’re all animals in a cruel, unforgiving world. At least, that’s the root of the film, for the film explores a wide range of topics: humans’ obsessive connection with materialism, a Marxist critique of capitalism, and the fragility of religion.
Death in the Garden screens tomorrow afternoon, February 11, and on February 20, at the Museum of Modern Art as part of “Buñuel in Mexico.”
