Brutus Buckeye is the athletics mascot of Ohio State University and an anthromorphic buckeye nut. Brutus made his debut in 1965, with periodic updates to design and wardrobe occurring in the years since.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Ohio State University, located in Columbus, Ohio. The athletic programs are named after the colloquial term for people from the state of Ohio and after the state tree, the Ohio buckeye.
Keith Burkes was the first Black person to be Brutus Buckeye, the Ohio State mascot, from 1974 to 1977. He expanded Brutus’ appearances, added fur to the costume and became a flight attendant and a state nut.
