Alvilde Lees-Milne died of a stroke at Essex House on 18 March 1994. She was survived by her husband, James, and her daughter, by her first marriage, Clarissa (Chaplin) Luke. James Lees-Milne died of cancer 3 years later.
In 1951, Lees-Milne married Alvilde, Viscountess Chaplin, née Bridges, a prominent gardening and landscape expert. Both were bisexual . Alvilde is said to have had lesbian affairs with Vita Sackville-West , Winnaretta Singer and others.

Alvilde became seriously ill in 1992, and Lees-Milne devoted the next two years of his life to caring for her. She died suddenly in 1994, James Lees-Milne having found her collapsed on the pathway of their Badminton home.
