The Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 (or S-46) is an American single-engine helicopter designed by Igor Sikorsky. It had a single three-blade rotor originally powered by a 75 horsepower (56 kW) engine. The first "free" flight of the VS-300 was on 13 May 1940.
Igor I. Sikorsky’s VS-300 was America’s first practical helicopter and the first successful helicopter in the world to perfect the now familiar single main rotor and tail rotor design. The VS-300 was first flown (tethered) on September 14, 1939 and the first untethered flight was on May 13, 1940.
O governo americano financia Igor Sikorsky, um inventor russo que fugiu da Revolução Comunista (1917), para desenvolver um modelo viável de aeronave com asas rotatórias. Ele cria o VS-300, o primeiro helicóptero funcional.
Igor Sikorsky and his development team considered the VS-300 to be a flying test bed to experiment with helicopter technologies, including rotor systems, flight controls and lightweight materials. Throughout its development, the VS-300 was improved continuously and had four major configurations, as described in more detail in The Design ...
The VS-300 was completely redesigned and rebuilt based on an early 1930 design by “Prof” Sikorsky, a draftsman, mathematician and cousin of Igor Sikorsky. In this second configuration, the VS-300 team removed the problematic cyclic pitch control of the first configuration and added two horizontal single-blade 40-inch diameter tail rotors ...
Igor I. Sikorsky’s VS-300 was America’s first practical helicopter. It was also the first successful helicopter in the world to pioneer the now familiar single main rotor with torque-compensating tail rotor de-sign. This became the standard configura-tion used by most of the world’s helicopter manufacturers ever since.
