Brewerton painted several important oil paintings depicting scenes in the Rockies that were bought by important Eastern collectors. Brewerton was a writer as well as an artist, and his accounts of his explorations with Carson were published as a series of articles in Harper’s Weekly.
George Douglas Brewerton contributed this self-portrait, labeled "The Author 'a la Kansas,'" to The War in Kansas; it was also reprinted in the September 1862 issue oí Harper's magazine.

George Douglas Brewerton (1820 - May 31, 1901) was an American artist, author, journalist, Yankee Protestant pastor, historian, lawyer, poet, and army officer. He specialized in painting landscapes and marines, and in sketch art.
