originally suggested the idea of developing a systematic approach to measuring progress in health financing following an external evaluation of a grant, providing the trigger for this work. Significant funding under the UK “Making Health Systems Stronger” grant was used for the conceptual development and country testing of the HFPM.

This study is, to our knowledge, the first analysis of global health financing to generate past trends, characterise present patterns, and predict future scenarios for 195 countries over a period spanning 56 years, with an emphasis on equity across countries over time, providing a holistic assessment of the state of global health financing.
