The Northumberland flag is the flag of the historic county of Northumberland and the banner of arms for Northumberland County Council. The shield of arms is in turn based on the arms medieval heralds had attributed to the Kingdom of Bernicia (which the first County Council used until it received a regular grant of arms).
11 de jul. de 2013 · Strictly, the flag is a banner of the arms of the Northumberland County Council but its origins predate the council by more than a millennium and although it is not registered as a “traditional” design, Northumberland’s flag is essentially of ancient origin and certainly part of a local tradition.

25 de jun. de 2022 · The Northumberland flag is based on a traditional flag which is probably the oldest known flag design in Britain. The Venerable Bede, England's first historian, records a banner of purple and gold which hung over the tomb of St. Oswald, the 7th century king of Northumbria.
The Northumbria Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic region. In his Ecclesiastical History of the English People ( c. 731 CE), Saint Bede described a flag in tomb of Oswald of Northumbria (604—42 CE).
