“The Mandorla Art Award is Australia’s most significant thematic Christian art prize, attracting some of the country’s finest artists since its inception in 1985. Held every two years. This is a contemporary fine art award in conversation with a Biblical text.
Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded. We celebrate the culture, ceremony, contribution and creativity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We bless these living cultures, enfolding them in a mandorla of prayer for the peace and flourishing of their communities.
The Mandorla Art Award for contemporary religious art is Australia's most significant thematic Christian art prize.
A mandorla is an almond -shaped aureola, i.e. a frame that surrounds the totality of an iconographic figure. It is usually synonymous with vesica, a lens shape. Mandorlas often surround the figures of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary in traditional Christian iconography. [1]
