Muzio’s illegitimate son Francesco Sforza, also a condottiere, became duke of Milan in 1450 through his marriage to the daughter of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti. Francesco’s eldest son, Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1444–76), succeeded his father in 1466.

The first son of Muzio Attendolo Sforza, Francesco I Sforza, married Bianca Maria (1425–1468) in 1441. She was the daughter and only heir of the last Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti. He thus acquired the title of Duke of Milan (1450–1466), ruled Milan for 16 years, and made the Sforzas the heirs of the house of Visconti.

The Sforza family was one of the most powerful families in and around Milan for about 100 years from 1450 to 1535. The line was founded by Muzio Attendolo around 1411. This family was very much involved in Papal politics and are featured in several series about the Medici’s and Borgia’s.

Muzio’s son Francesco Sforza (1401–66) was also a soldier of fortune. He grew up in the court of Ferrara and fought under his father until Muzio drowned in a battle in 1424. Francesco remained a soldier for the next 20 years.
