This statue is in honour of Flora MacDonald of the Clan Macdonald of Sleat, who is best known for sheltering the young pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie and allowing his escape from the Hanovarian forces after the Battle of Culloden.

On 28th June 1746, Flora MacDonald and her Isish maid ‘Betty Burke’ sailed from Benbecula over the sea to Skye. The maid was the thinly disguised ‘Bony Prince Charlie’ and the event is commemorated in the famous Skye Boat Song.
One of the most romantic characters in Scottish history, Flora MacDonald is famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from Scotland after the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
