St Mary's Church in the village of Downe, Bromley (formerly Kent) is the Church of England Parish Church for the parish of Downe. It is a Grade II* listed building, which dates from the 13th century. [1] The church is dedicated to either St Mary the Virgin or St Mary Magdalene.
St Mary's church history. In 1291 Prior Henry built a chapel in the Manor of Orpington at a cost of £61.0.11d. it is possible it was on the site of the present Church. The steeple must have been built by the 16th century because an inventory refers to three bells. Two were made by William Dawe of London (1385-1418) one unknown maker in 1511.

St Mary The Virgin's Church, Downe, Kent. Image Source: Chris Luscombe. Dominating its tiny village square, St Mary's Church is obviously the result of much Victorian intervention. Records show that the church was in a poor condition until rescued by the architect Daniel Bell in 1879.
