James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond and 2nd Earl of Ossory (c. 1496 – 1546), known as the Lame (Irish: Bacach), was in 1541 confirmed as Earl of Ormond thereby ending the dispute over the Ormond earldom between his father, Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond, and Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire.
Piers Butler was 1st cousin twice removed of Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormond (common ancestor James, 3rd Earl). Upon Thomas' death on 3 August 1515, Piers Butler eventually became the 8th Earl, but not without great difficulty.

Piers Butler, 8th earl of Ormonde was a leading member of the Butler family in Ireland; he claimed the earldom in 1515, seized the estates, and revived the Butler influence. A cousin of the 7th earl (Thomas Butler), who died without issue, Piers Butler fought for the English against the rebel Irish.
