  1. John Lovelace, 4th Baron Lovelace (1672—1709) was the Governor of both New York and New Jersey . Biography. He was the son of William Lovelace of Hurst, Berkshire. He was the grandson of Francis Lovelace, son of Richard Lovelace, 1st Baron Lovelace.

  2. Baron Lovelace, of Hurley in the County of Berks, was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created on 31 May 1627 for Sir Richard Lovelace, who had earlier represented Berkshire, Abingdon and Windsor in Parliament. The second Baron served as Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire.

  3. The third new Governor of New York after Francis Lovelace was John Lovelace, 4th Baron Lovelace of Hurley – no kin to Francis of the Bethersden Lovelaces.

  4. Although Lovelace seems to have been respected as ‘a man of integrity’, his early death makes it impossible to judge how effective his governorship might have been. He was succeeded in the peerage briefly by his eldest surviving son, also John Lovelace, who died within a fortnight of his father.

  5. Lovelace resumed his seat in the House on 18 June 1678 but was present on only seven of the session’s 43 sitting days, and he was nominated to just one committee. On 4 July he registered his proxy with John Egerton, 2nd earl of Bridgwater, which was vacated by the close of the session.
