Edward (Portuguese: Duarte [d u ˈ a ɾ t(ɨ)]; 31 October 1391 – 9 September 1438), also called Edward the Philosopher King (Duarte o Rei-Filósofo) or the Eloquent (o Eloquente), was the King of Portugal from 1433 until his death. Edward (born October 30, 1391, Viseu, Portugal—died September 9, 1438, Tomar) was the king of Portugal whose brief reign (1433–38) witnessed a strengthening of the monarchy through reform of royal land-grant laws, a continuation of voyages of discovery, and a military disaster in Tangier.
