Marriott International is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. The company is the successor to the hospitality division of the Marriott Corporation, founded by J. Willard Marriott (1900–1985) and his wife Alice Marriott (1907–2000).
Alice Sheets Marriott Edwin, a lawyer and a Bishop in the local stake of the Mormon Church, died in the flu epidemic of 1919 when Alice was only 12. While her widowed mother kept the household together, the young girl applied herself to her studies, entering the University of Utah at age 16.
Alice Lee Marriott, née Goulding (8 January 1910 – 18 March 1992), was an American historian and anthropologist of the American Southwest and Native Americans. She is a member of the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame.
American restaurant executive Alice Sheets Marriott (1907–2000) helped her husband build a chain of successful eateries and hotels that became Marriott International. When she died at the age of 92, the company was still in family hands and posted sales that neared the $10-billion mark.
