  5. Johan Barthold Jongkind. 1819 - 1891. Jongkind was born in Latrop (Holland). He was influenced by Isabey. He lived partly in Holland, and partly in France. He specialised in landscapes. He was a friend of Boudin and influenced the young Monet .

  6. Jongkind never exhibited with the Impressionists but he is regarded as one of their precursors. Several elements in The Seine and Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris suggest this kinship.

He left school at 16 to find employment with a solicitor but in 1837 his mother, a widow since the previous year, allowed him to leave for The Hague in order to attend classes at the Drawing Academy.
