Ambrosius Holbein (c. 1494 – c. 1519) was a German and later a Swiss artist in painting, drawing, and printmaking. He was the elder brother, by about three years, of Hans Holbein the Younger , but he appears to have died in his mid-twenties, leaving behind only a small body of work.

Ambrosius Holbein was a German and Swiss artist in painting, drawing and printmaking. He was the elder brother, by about three years, of Hans Holbein the Younger, but he appears to have died in his mid twenties leaving behind only a small body of work.
In 1515, at the age of 18, Hans Holbein the Younger left Augsburg to spend his journeyman’s years working under other artists, and initially followed his brother Ambrosius to Basel. Influenced and inspired by the art of his birthplace on the Lech, he was about to embark on a stellar career.
