Sumio Iijima is a Japanese physicist and inventor, often cited as the inventor of carbon nanotubes. He discovered and elucidated the atomic structure and helical character of multi-wall and single-wall carbon nanotubes, and received many awards and honors for his contributions to nanotechnology.
