Giovan Carlo de' Medici, talvolta indicato come Gian Carlo (Firenze, 3 giugno 1611 – Villa di Castello, 23 gennaio 1663), è stato un cardinale italiano.
Member of the famous Florentine family, son of Cosimo II (q.v.), he served as Generalissimo dei Mare in the Spanish navy, was made a cardinal in 1644 and was in Rome from 1655 to 1656.
La spedizione fu un disastro dal punto di vista sia militare sia politico. Pertanto, tornato in Toscana alla fine del 1642, il M. chiese l’esonero dalla carica (che, peraltro, almeno formalmente, mantenne fino alla morte).
The painting was acquired by Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici, the Dutch artist's greatest patron during his Italian period, between 1649 and 1657, who kept fifteen paintings by this artist in his residences.
