Archduke Karl Albrecht of Austria-Teschen (Karl Albrecht Nikolaus Leo Gratianus von Österreich, later Karl Albrecht Habsburg-Lothringen, since 1919 – Karol Olbracht Habsburg-Lotaryński; 18 December 1888 – 17 March 1951) was an Austrian military officer, a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.

  3. Born in Vienna on 3 August 1817, Albrecht was the second child of Archduke Karl and Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg. As the son of the ‘Victor of Aspern’, he was evidently influenced by the military ideals that prevailed in the paternal household and was keen to emulate his father.

  4. Archduke Karl, a son of Leopold II, was originally destined for the Church. However, in his youth he developed military inclinations. His adoptive parents – Leopold’s sister Marie Christine and her husband Albert of Saxony-Teschen – supported the young archduke in his ambitions.

One of the most conservative Habsburg personalities in the nineteenth century, Archduke Albrecht came to symbolize the upholding of the Absolutist values that were widely shared in the dynasty and diametrically opposed to the modernizing currents prevailing in society at the turn of the century.
