When Dr Johnson’s friend Topham Beauclerk died in 1780, his small collection of antiquities was sold along with a range of objects reflecting his interests in all branches of natural philosophy. Some of the antiquities came to the British Museum via Joseph Banks and Charles Townley.
James Boswell, future author of the Life of Johnson, found Topham Beauclerk “a man of wit, literature and fashion in a distinguished degree.” He was very conscious that Topham was the great-grandson of Charles II and Nell Gwyn. Dr Johnson said he “would walk to the extent of the diameter of the earth to save Beauclerk.”
