  5. Sexburga of Ely was the Queen of Kent, wife of King Ercenbert. After her husband's death she retired to the convent at Sheppey, that she had founded, before moving to the convent of Ely. After her repose, Sexburga succeeded her sister Etheldreda as abbess of Ely.

  6. Sexburga lay at the feet of Etheldreda, to her east. She is depicted with Etheldreda in a fine retable from Etheldreda's shrine, now at the Society of Antiquaries. London, and also figures in sculptured scenes of Etheldreda's life at Ely Cathedral.

  7. Sexburga was the eldest daughter of King Anna of East Anglia and his second wife, Saewara: one of four saintly sisters. She married King Erconbert of Kent and became mother of the future Kings Egbert I and Hlothere, as well as SS. Ermengilda and Ercongota.
