John Erskine, the 23rd and 6th Earl of Mar and 1st Duke of Mar, KT (1675 – May 1732), was a prominent Scottish nobleman and a key figure in the Jacobite movement. He held the title of the 23rd Earl of Mar from the earldom's first creation and was the sixth earl in its seventh creation (of 1565).
This paper briefly introduces the political background to Lord Mar's belief that economic and industrial developments were the preconditions for the restoration of Scotland's political autonomy following the Act of Union of 1707.

He had been an eager champion of the Anglo-Scottish Union of 1707 and had held important and profitable political posts under Queen Anne, as this print indicates.
A printed list of the time noted him as a Whig. At the end of May 1708 he wrote to Marlborough conveying news of the elections for the burghs and thanking him for sending up his proxy (Marlborough holding the Scottish peerage of Churchill of Eyemouth).
