Gerald FitzGerald, 8th Duke of Leinster (27 May 1914 – 3 December 2004) was the premier Duke, Marquess and Earl in the Peerage of Ireland.
When Maurice, 6th Duke of Leinster, died, mad and childless, in February 1922, the Leinster dukedom and its considerable wealth and estates devolved upon his youngest brother, Lord Edward FitzGerald, who succeeded as 7th Duke.

But the political climate changed radically in 1485 with reports that Henry Tudor was set to invade England. In a preemptive strike, Kildare had the Irish parliament pass an act (June 1485) that ensured his election as deputy governor if Henry became king.

Education and early career Between the ages of eight and sixteen, Gerald was detained at the English court as a surety for his father's good behaviour. He was raised in the company of princes Arthur and Henry and received a regular aristocratic English education based on the classics and vernacular Renaissance literature.
