Serebryakov, a retired professor and his beautiful, much younger second wife, Yelena, visit their country estate, which funds their urban lifestyle.
Vanya (Michael Redgrave), irmão da primeira esposa do professor e Astrov(Laurence Olivier), médico local, se apaixonam por Yelena. Enquanto isso, Sonya(Joan Plowright), filha do professor sobre de insegurança com a sua aparência e seus sentimentos não correspondidos por Astrov.
