Mit insgesamt 13 Medaillen war Willi Melliger der erfolgreichste Schweizer Springreiter bei Europameisterschaften. [5] Erstmals am Weltcupfinal nahm Melliger 1982 mit Trumpf-Buur teil. 1983 errang er mit Van Gogh zwei grosse Erfolge: Er wurde zum zweiten Mal Schweizer Meister (dies sollte ihm insgesamt sechs Mal gelingen).

With his horse Calvaro V , he won two Olympic silver medals: the first in show jumping at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the second as part of team jumping at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney .

The unforgettable Swiss champion Willi Melliger died on Tuesday night in the hospital where he had been hospitalized for 5 weeks for a cerebral ischemia, which had caused him a coma.
