Known for his work on screen and stage, he has received various accolades, including a BAFTA TV Award, a Primetime Emmy Award and a Laurence Olivier Award, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards and four Golden Globes.
Father of actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Used to read "The Hobbit" to his son Benedict Cumberbatch, creating voices for all the characters. Cumberbatch was inspired by this to audition for Peter Jackson 's film version, and ended up being cast as the voice of Smaug.
