Hon. Charles Boyle was the eldest son of Charles Boyle, 3rd Viscount Dungarvan and his first wife, Lady Jane Seymour. Career.

Boyle, Charles (1670?–1704), 3rd earl of Cork , 2nd earl of Burlington , politician, was second child but first son of Charles Boyle, Viscount Dungarvan (Ireland) and Baron Clifford (England), and Jane Boyle (née Seymour), daughter of the 2nd duke of Somerset. His grandfather was Richard Boyle, 2nd earl of Cork and 1st earl of Burlington (qv).

  3. Richard Boyle, the 3rd Earl, died in 1753 and so Burlington House passed to his widow and then to their grandson William Cavendish. William Cavendish’s mother Charlotte Boyle (the 3rd Earls daughter) was married to the 4th Duke of Devonshire and so when the Duke died in 1764, William became the 5th Duke of Devonshire.

  5. History. The first creation was for Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork, on 20 March 1664 (see the Earl of Cork for earlier history of the family). He had previously been created Baron Clifford of Londesborough , in the County of York, on 4 November 1644, also in the Peerage of England.

  6. Lord Burlington was born in Yorkshire into a wealthy Anglo-Irish aristocratic family, the only son of Charles Boyle, 2nd Earl of Burlington and his wife, Juliana Boyle ( née Noel; 1672–1750). He succeeded to his titles and extensive estates in Yorkshire and Ireland at the age of nine, after his father's death in February 1704.
