Lieutenant-General William Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan KT, PC (c. 1671-1726) was an Irish-born British Army officer. He began his active military service during the Williamite War in Ireland in 1689 and ended it with the suppression of the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion.

Cadogan, William. Cadogan, William (1672–1726), 1st Baron and Earl Cadogan , soldier, was born at Liscartan, Co. Meath, eldest son of Henry Cadogan (1642–1714), barrister, of Liscartan and Dublin, and Bridget Cadogan, daughter of Sir Hardress Waller (qv); his grandfather was William Cadogan (1601–61; (qv)).

William Cadogan Cadogan, 1st Earl (kədŭ´gən), 1675–1726, British general and diplomat. He is remembered chiefly as the faithful friend and brilliant subordinate of the 1st duke of Marlborough.
Biography. Through his expertise in logistics Cadogan became the most trusted staff officer of the Earl (later Duke) of Marlborough (John Churchill†), a position which afforded him considerable power and influence in his own right, and from which eventually he launched his own career in high politics.
