Elizabeth Monroe (née Kortright; June 30, 1768 – September 23, 1830) was the first lady of the United States from 1817 to 1825, as the wife of James Monroe, fifth president of the United States.

In 1794, Elizabeth Monroe accompanied her husband to France when President George Washington appointed him United States minister. Arriving in Paris in the midst of the French Revolution, she took a dramatic part in saving Marquis de Lafayette’s wife, imprisoned and expecting death by guillotine.
