Oficialmente estabelecido em 14 de dezembro de 1751 pela Imperatriz Maria Theresa da Áustria, a academia é considerada uma das escolas militares mais antigas do mundo. Também é conhecido por ter sido a única unidade militar a opor resistência armada por alguns dias contra as forças alemãs durante o Anschluss em 1938 .
The Noble Military Academy at Wiener Neustadt was opened in 1752 at state expense, and the aim of the Habsburg authorities was to make it a counterpart of the Theresianum Knight Academy (founded in 1746 under the Jesuit administration).
