KwaMashu is a township 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) north of Durban, South Africa. The name honours Sir Marshall Campbell and means Place of Marshall. KwaMashu is bordered by Newlands East to the south, Newlands West to the west, Ntuzuma to the north, Phoenix to the north-east, Mount Edgecombe to the east and Durban North to the south-east.

KwaMashu is one of Durban’s first townships. It was established in 1959 because of the Group Areas Act. Most of the people who live within the borders of KwaMashu originally come from Umkhumbane (Cato Manor). People were removed from Umkhumbane during the apartheid regime in 1950’s.
KwaMashu is a black township situated on hilly terrain. approximately 12 miles northeast of Durban. It is named for the late Sir Marshall Campbell, a Natal sugar magnate and the former owner of the six square miles of land.
It is through people like Chamane that we will see the area of KwaMashu shake off its history of oppression and move towards a bright bold future!
