The song was written by Petricca and New York songwriter Nick Lerangis as their time at Kenyon College came to an end. "It's about college, about maintaining that little bit of being a kid," Petricca said. "Don't be afraid to play." The song was named after one of their favorite teachers.

The song is named after their professor (see here and here) from Kenyon College (who now teaches at Duke University) and is meant to symbolize youth.
