Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. (November 9, 1915 – January 18, 2011) was an American diplomat, politician, and activist. As the husband of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, he was part of the Kennedy family.

Despite his success as Ambassador and his family’s apparent contentment with life in Paris, Sargent Shriver’s thoughts and ambitions were never far from the political scene back in the United States.
During the Kennedy Administration, Sargent Shriver created the Peace Corps, serving as its first Director. This bold and enduring international program builds peace and fosters diplomacy by sending Americans to work on local projects in communities throughout the developing world.
