He served as chancellor of the University of Oxford (1792–1809) and as Prime Minister of Great Britain (1783) and then of the United Kingdom (1807–1809).

  5. In 1799, Lord William went to Italy, where he served for two years as liaison officer with the Austro-Russian forces. In 1801 he embarked for Egypt to command the cavalry, but saw no active service. His star continued to rise with his appointment, in 1803, as Governor of Madras.
