Wen Qimei (12 February 1867 – 5 October 1919; born Wen Suqin) was the mother of Mao Zedong.
Mao's father, Mao Yichang, had been born in Shaoshanchong to a family of poverty before undergoing an arranged marriage to Mao's mother, Wen Qimei, when he was fifteen years old. While Yichang had received two years of schooling and could read and write, conversely Qimei was illiterate. [7]

Mao adopted Buddhism from his mother but quickly discarded it in his teens. At thirteen, Mao was forcefully married to a local girl aged seventeen named Luo Yixiu in what essentially amounted to a business deal for his father.

Her father, Wen Qifu, was a poor shoemaker who was a heavy drinker. Her mother was a 14 year old concubine of Qifu's when she was born.
Yichang's wife, Wen Qimei, was a devout Buddhist who tried to temper her husband's strict attitude. Zedong too became a Buddhist, but abandoned this faith in his mid-teenage years. At the age of eight, Mao was sent to Shaoshan Primary School where he learned the value systems of Confucianism.
