Field Marshal Philip Walhouse Chetwode, 1st Baron Chetwode, 7th Baronet of Oakley, GCB, OM, GCSI, KCMG, DSO, GCStJ (21 September 1869 – 6 July 1950), was a senior British Army officer. He saw action during the Second Boer War, during which he was present at the Siege of Ladysmith in December 1899.
Sir Philip Walhouse Chetwode (1869-1950) served as a cavalry commander during World War One on both Western and (more effectively) Palestine Fronts. Sponsored Links. Chetwode's early service was in Burma and he subsequently saw action during the South African War (1899-1902).
Allenby ultimately settled on a plan devised by one of his most competent officers, Lt. Gen. Philip Chetwode, which called for an attack on Beersheba at the other end of the Ottoman line. Beersheba itself was an ancient but otherwise unremarkable desert town at the foot of the Judean Hills.
The Desert Column was a First World War British Empire army corps which operated in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign from 22 December 1916. [Note 1] The Column was commanded by Lieutenant General Philip W. Chetwode and formed part of Eastern Force.
Baron Chetwode, of Chetwode in the County of Buckingham, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1945 for the noted military commander Field Marshal Sir Philip Chetwode, 7th Baronet. As of 2014 the titles are held by his grandson, the second Baron, who succeeded in 1950.
