History of the university. Early history - from the "Hohe Schule" to the Academy (1500-1834) The foundations of the University of Bern were laid in the 16th century, when the Reformation made it necessary for new priests to be educated in a higher education establishment.
The University of Bern (German: Universität Bern, French: Université de Berne, Latin: Universitas Bernensis) is a public research university in the Swiss capital of Bern. It was founded in 1834. It is regulated and financed by the Canton of Bern.

Our research deals with the history of Europe from antiquity to the present, as well as with the history of regions outside of Europe.
The doctorate can be obtained either within the sturucture of a doctoral programme (e.g. WBKolleg or IFZG) or as a free doctorate. If you are interested in pursuing a PhD, please contact a supervisor directly. The university and faculty regulate the specific details of doctoral studies.
On June 27, 1919, Walter Benjamin passed his doctoral exam at the University of Bern. Exactly 100 years later, we want to celebrate this with an academic ceremony in the presence of three of Walter Benjamin’s granddaughters and two great grandchildren. The rector of the University of Bern, Prof. Dr. Christian Leumann, will give the welcome address.
26 de jun. de 2019 · Walter Benjamin obtained his doctoral degree on June 27 of 1919 at the University of Bern. Precisely 100 years on, this serves as an occasion to host the bi-annual conference organized by the International Walter Benjamin Society in Bern and to look at these beginnings.
