Founded by Jessica Smith Vance and Frederica de Laguna as a small college preparatory school in 1904, it was initially located opposite of Westlake Park. In 1917, the school moved to Westmoreland Avenue in the Wilshire district and then to the location at 700 N. Faring Road.;
