William Pars' elder brother Henry assisted Shipley in his school and when Shipley retired around 1760, Henry Pars took over and William became his assistant. Cosway, Mortimer, Humphry and Smart were all pupils of the school at the time.
Interested in art from a young age, he attended Henry Pars’s Drawing School on the Strand, where he learned how to draw the human figure from plaster casts. At the age of 14, he began a seven-year apprenticeship to James Basire, a conservative, somewhat old-fashioned commercial printmaker known for his architectural prints.

He served a five-year apprenticeship with the commercial engraver James Basire before entering the Royal Academy Schools as an engraver at the age of twenty-two.
