Stanley was the son of John Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley of Alderley, and Lady Maria Josepha, daughter of John Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield. His elder twin brother was Edward Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley.
