The troubadour tradition seems to have begun in western Aquitaine ( Poitou and Saintonge) and Gascony, from there spreading over into eastern Aquitaine ( Limousin and Auvergne) and Provence. At its height it had become popular in Languedoc and the regions of Rouergue, Toulouse, and Quercy (c. 1200).

Un troubadour (de l' occitan trobador, trobairitz au féminin : « trouveur », « trouveuse » au féminin) est un compositeur, poète, et musicien médiéval de langue d'oc qui interprétait ou faisait interpréter ses œuvres poétiques par des jongleurs ou des ménestrels.
Trovador (francês: troubadour [tʁubaduʁ]; occitano: trobador [tɾuβaˈður]; pronúncia arcaica: [tɾuβaˈðor]), na lírica medieval, era o artista de origem nobre do sul da França que, geralmente acompanhado de instrumentos musicais, como o alaúde ou a cistre, compunha e entoava cantigas.
Juntamente com ele, outros homens e mulheres cantaram este modo de viver – lírico e cortês – ao longo do século XII até o século XIV no sul da França. Os homens elaboradores de poesia eram conhecidos como troubadours, enquanto as mulheres poetas eram conhecidas como trobairitz.
