Johan de Witt was a Dutch statesman and a major political figure in the Dutch Republic in the mid-17th century. He was Grand Pensionary of Holland and a leader of the States Party, but he was lynched in 1672 after the Rampjaar, a disastrous war with England, France and Germany.
