Connecting to a device. 1) Run the Winbox utility. 2) Navigate to "Neighbors". 3) See if Winbox finds your Router and it's MAC address. Info: Winbox neighbor discovery will discover all routers on the broadcast network. 4) If you see your router on the list, connect to it by clicking on IP/MAC address and pressing Connect button.
The console is used for accessing the MikroTik Router's configuration and management features using text terminals, either remotely using serial port, telnet, SSH or console screen within Winbox, or directly using monitor and keyboard. The console is also used for writing scripts. This manual describes the general console operation principles.
Applies to RouterOS: v6.34+. The Dude is a free application by MikroTik, which can dramatically improve the way you manage your network environment. It will automatically scan all devices within specified subnets, draw and layout a map of your networks, monitor services of your devices and execute actions based on device state changes.
For X86 systems (ie. PC devices), you need to obtain a license key. The license key is a block of symbols that needs to be copied from your mikrotik.com account, or from the email you received in, and then it can be pasted into the router. You can paste the key anywhere in the terminal, or by clicking "Paste key" in Winbox License menu.
Summary. Winbox is a small utility that allows administration of MikroTik RouterOS using a fast and simple GUI. It is a native Win32 binary, but can be run on Linux and MacOS (OSX) using Wine. All Winbox interface functions are as close as possible mirroring the console functions, that is why there are no Winbox sections in the manual.
