BEATRICE PORTINARI was born in 1266 and died in 1290. She was the daughter of a wealthy family of Florence, Italy , and married Simone dei Bardi. Dante met her when she was nine years old, dressed in a gown of dark red color, and her appearance made a lasting impression upon him.

The Portinari, a family that originated from Fiesole, lived in Florence, near Dante’s House, located in the old town of Florence; in fact, it is currently on Via del Corso. Folco Portinari had six daughters.
If the theory is true that Beatrice was indeed the daughter of the Florentine noble, Folco Portinari, she was a married woman, and the mother of a family, who apparently perished without ever knowing her effect on the young poet. The death of her father in 1289 is said to have hastened her own. On June 9, 1290, at age 24, Beatrice Portinari died.
