As Victor Emmanuel's wife, she briefly claimed the titles Empress of Ethiopia and Queen of the Albanians ; both titles were dropped when her husband formally renounced them in 1943.

Living at the Metropole Hotel, Queen Elena died of a pulmonary embolism on November 28, 1952. She is buried in the Montpellier Municipal Cemetery. Queen Elena went down in history as the last Italian queen. Pope Pius XII, in a condolence telegram sent to her son Umberto II for the queen’s death, defined her as a “Lady of charitable work”.
