Born in Portland in 1807, when that bustling port city was still part of Massachusetts, Longfellow came from an old, established family of lawyers, judges, and generals.
Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, on 27 February 1807. He was the second child and second son of Zilpah Wadsworth and Stephen Longfellow. Henry's maternal grandfather, General Peleg Wadsworth, was a Revolutionary war hero who went on to serve in the Massachusetts legislature and the U.S. Congress.
