Em 1748 Jacques-Louis David nasceu em Paris, no seio de uma família pequeno-burguesa tradicionalmente dedicada ao comércio. Por volta de 1770, o jovem David começou a tomar aulas de pintura com o velho mestre Vien, que alguns anos mais tarde viria a ser nomeado diretor da Academia de França em Roma. O discípulo acompanhou o mestre à Itália.
