Sir Roland Penrose was a British artist, collector, and writer known best for his curatorial work and promotion of modern and contemporary artists. Penrose attended Queens’ College, Cambridge, and earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1922.
Roland Penrose wurde nach der erfolgreichen Picasso-Ausstellung in der Tate 1958 im Jahr 1960 zum Commander of the British Empire (CBE) erhoben. 1966 wurde er mit dem Knight Bachelor für seine Verdienste zur Förderung der Gegenwartskunst zum Ritter geschlagen.

Penrose also left several important works to the Tate, including Picasso’s Still Life (1914), which he had purchased from Éluard in 1938 and his Weeping Woman (1937), which was purchased from the artist just after its completion. Sir Roland Algernon Penrose (14 October 1900 – 23 April 1984) was an English artist, historian and poet. He was a major promoter and collector of modern art and an associate of the surrealists in the United Kingdom. During the Second World War he put his artistic skills to practical use as a teacher of camouflage.
Roland Penrose and Lee Miller köpte 1949 Farley Farm House i Sussex, där Penrose visade sin omfattande samling av modern konst, särskilt surrealistisk konst och verk av Picasso. Penrose formgav själv landskapet runt huset som en skulpturpark för modern skulptur.
